Quilt and patchwork day continued, again

Until yesterday evening I had no idea what I had won. Fortunatly Margeeth was so kind as to return not only my quilt but also the price I’ve won. I was surprised to see that I had won a lot of fabric. It will find it’s way to the sewing machine I guess. By the way, thank you all for the lovely emails and reactions. One gets cheerful of that!

Quilt and patchwork days Rijswijk - continued

The quilt that I send to the Bernina competition during the Quilt and Patchwork days in Rijswijk has won a price, a first price. At first I was a bit ashamed that I send in for the category Beginner. But according to Bernina one is a beginner when you never took part of a competition and you’re not quilting very long. That’s correct, so OK. During the show there also exhibitions of the Belgian group Q.Art and the results of an international quilt competition "A garden passionately" of the 13e Carrefour Européen du Patchwork in Val d’Argent, France. There where astonishing beautiful quilts. Walking around I thought “yes, I am just a beginner’. I am proud of myself after all!

Work in progress: the theme Mother

Saturday Willy and Emmy came to my house. Always a pleasure, the days with these inspiring ladies.
We are all busy with the theme ‘Mother’ (See this post). At first it seemed a good idea to keep all our activities a secret for each other. However, we are not good in keeping secrets because we talk too much. So we decided to show everything to each other anyway. But they didn’t take their work with them so in de end I am the only one showing it. I am still curious to know what they are doing. I am getting on well but still a long way to go. I’ve got something like a top, the base is ready but a lot of work to be done. The symbolism is already there. I made the profile of my sunny daughter. The shadow of the profile stands for de shadow which she casts to the future. Because of her muscular disease her future is a little uncertain. The butterflies are representing my three children, two of them already flying a bit on there own and butterfly Milou staying close. All in all it meets the them Mother I think.

Yesterday the Dutch Bag Ladies came together. My work was finished for a while but I had to keep it a secret until now. My juvenile behaviour when I saw the fabrics for the first time last till the end. Nevertheless, the theme ‘ give credit to the name of the group’ is there.
I made 3 Dutch ladies. Dutch in the way that Holland is a multicultural country with people in all colours. They all hold a bag. So that’s right! So where’s the juvenile behaviour? First of all, I used as less of the fabrics as possilble. Second, I made all the bags removable. When I was home again, I removed all the bags.

Just doodling around

I am busy with the theme Mother. The result will be lovely, even though I say so myself! I’ll make you a bit curious. In the mean time some small things in hand. Those things you make while watching telly. Made the base on the new bought embellisher (the old one fell and broke). It took some time to get a new one and in the meantime you always have get going with it.

Quilt and patchwork days Rijswijk

One of my quilts will be on the Quilt and Patchwork days in Rijswijk. This time it’s the same as ever. All unpleasant jobs have been putting off until the end. So now I have to make a hanging sleeve, a quilt label and a bag. I hate it, I want to spend my time doing other, nicer, things. On the other hand, I like it when it’s on a show, so don’t bug! What I like about having a quilt on a show is sneaky listening to other peoples comment on your work. I am looking forward to it. Sneak preview.

Another project

I’m not a one by one person. I like doing a lot of things at the same time. You can see that when you look at my ‘ studio’ , it’s just some kind of lumber shed. In the mean time I am busy working on the theme ‘Mother’. What’s it gonna be?? For now it’s a secret, I’ll show it later.
Also busy with this photograph. It’s taken in the butterfly garden in a Dutch zoo. Always a nice spot to make pictures. It will be a not so large quilt. In my opinion that’s something like a square meter.

Finished

A wonderful creative day yesterday, together with Bep, Emmy and Willy. Took a big shopper with me with all the finished work of the last weeks. We chattered all day and exchanged ideas. It’s an hour driving back home, and that’s quit therapeutically because otherwise I keep on chattering at home as well. I also took my small pink quilt with me. I like him, it’s cute.

Book cover

A week or two ago I told you about Margeeth’s challenge. In the meantime I’ve done the job. But it remains a secret until the group has come together. Since the start there’s a little grumbling about the choice of fabrics. I had that problem as well. I digged my heels in and walked along the edges of the task. I solved it by using the absolute minimum of the fabrics.
Because of this I yet tended to reverse my behaviour. I used all the left overs to make a book cover. And I like it!

Verfochtend/Dye morning

Willy, Emmy and I thought it was a good idea to challenge each other creatively every now and then. My honour to start. I choose the theme ‘Mother’. We all are a mother and have/had a mother. Both parts didn’t always turn out perfect, strange, we are definitely the only ones! There are no further restrictions to the challenge, that only one seemed enough.
I am mother of two sons (12 and 13 years old) and a multiple complex disabled daughter (I don’t’ know whether this is the right translation, what I mean that she has more than one handicap both physically en mentally) of 10 years old. You can feel it coming, the cute boys won’t be the subject of the challenge, the lovely but troublesome daughter will.
I have the global idea already on my mind, the contradiction between her bright nature and her disease which brings along that we always are her hands an feet.
For a start I dyed the whole morning. Especially the embroidery threads are beautiful. I’d rather keep them on a skein. Furthermore I dyed some mull, voile and plain cotton.

Oh, sometimes ...

Sometimes it seems that you're not very handy. This week was one of those weeks. Within 7 days I not only ruined my heat tool but my embellisher as well. Clever!
How the heat tool went broke, I don’t know, it just did. Unfortunately I know how de embellisher broke. I was muddling along in my sewing room. The room is entirely stuffed with shelves and tables. I can reach everything easily with my office chair. Lovely those wheels underneath. Until the cord of the pedal of the embellisher managed to get tied up between the wheels. And yes, after a few turns in my room my embellisher crashed down. Like a peanut butter sandwich it fell right on the wrong side. Drive shaft and the engine broke. Of course I was just in the mood for punching.

Opruimen/ Cleaning up

You probably know it as well. Your experiments are mounting up but you don’t know what to do with them. My default solutions is to make some pillows, little bags or book covers. In my case not a bad idea as well because I intend to sell my work in June on a local arts and crafts market. And just imagine that someone want’s to buy something, than I’ll better make some stock. So today I started to make book covers. It nearly went wrong. I was a bit fanatic with the heating tool and something catch fire. So now there is a decorative hole in one of my objects.

Stamps again

Stamps with depth step by step.
I made some stamps yesterday and today, you can see the result underneath. Maybe this way of making stamps was already invented by someone, but it didn’t land in my place. Today I invented this!

1. Nodig:
Dubbelzijdig tapijtplakband.

1. Requirements:
2 sheets of acrylic glass
1 black and white copy of your picture
2 mirrored black and white copies of your picture
1 piece of foam the size of the acrylic glass
Double sided tapestry tape

2. cover your foam sheet completely with tape. Glue the normal copy of your picture on the paper backing of the tapestry tape. Tape the pieces of acrylic glass with masking tape on the mirrored copies.

3. cut out the figures. Use the tapestry tape to stick the black parts on one of the acrylic panes and the white parts on the other one. Use the picture as guide.

4. When you are finished it looks like this.

.

5. And this the result. When you work more neat then I do the edges will be smoother but I like it this way.

A real challenge

Maar what’s in a name).

Recently I joined a group of quilters with the name Dutch Bag Ladies (Yes, I know, it sounds like a vagabond with all his belongings in some plastic bags, but what’s in a name!). We meet 4-5 times a year. One of the ladies puts together a bag with some fabric, fibres etc. and a theme. You have to use what’s in the bag to make a quilt. This time it was Margeeth’s turn, and she is making it difficult for me. The theme is “ Live up to the name of the group”. That’s not my problem but the fabrics are. I put them in sight hoping that there will be a spontaneous idea popping up in my head. But no. I became an intractable character at once!
Doesn’t matter Margeeth, in the end it will turn our right (I hope!).

Windforce 9

Yesterday a day with Willy and Emmy, a very pleasant day. We always have to show each other a lot of work and talk all day about what we made a will be making soon. This time we were near the sea where Willy was having a vacation. We walked on the beach with wind force 9. Every now and then we had to run because the wind took the upper part of our bodies but not our feet. Sandblasted in every pore.

Just the beginning of a bag

Vandaag weer eens iets heel anders.

Today something completely different. I tried free crochet for an evening but decided that it was not my thing. It looks nice but I became restive of it. It took too long to get result. The result looked nice anyway so I decided to but it on the flap of a bag.

laagland gaan,
ijle populieren
als hoge pluimen
aan den einder staan;
en in geweldige
ruimte verzonken
de boerderijen
verspreid door het land,
boomgroepen, dorpen,
geknotte torens,
kerken en olmen
in een groots verband.
De lucht hangt er laag
en de zon wordt er langzaam
in grijze veelkleurige
dampen gesmoord,
en in alle gewesten
wordt de stem van het water
met zijn eeuwige rampen
gevreesd en gehoord.

In the meantime I was busy making a quilt fot the annual show of the Dutch Quiltersguild.
The theme of the show was take a poem as source of inspiration. I live in a area with big wide rivers. There is a well known Dutch poem about these rivers. It’s from the poet Hendrik Marsman (translated by Paul Vincent). I dyed some cotton and printed some photo’s and I added organza, fibers, paint, paintstiks and a lot of stitching. Unfortunately it is not allowed to publish the quilt on a weblog before the show, so it will be published later. But the poem itself is very nice. You have to do it with that until after the show!

Memory of Holland
Thinking of Holland
I see wide-flowing rivers
slowly traversing
infinite plains,
inconceivably
rarefied poplars
like lofty plumes
on the skyline in lanes;
and submerged in the vastness
of unbounded spaces
the farmhouses
strewn over the land,
tree clumps, villages,
truncated towers,
churches and elm trees -
all wondrously planned.
the sky hangs low
and slowly the sun by
mists of all colours
is stifled and greyed
and in all the regions
the voice of the water
with its endless disasters
is feared and obeyed.

Experiment

This morning I experimented with painted tyvek, plastic gift wrap, felt en plastic bags. The result looked fine. Now I have tot think about something to make from it, otherwise my box with nice experiments will be quit pointless.

Using the stamps

Simpele stempels zijn toch altijd handig. Even snel wat uitgeprobeerd. Geeft ook een rechttoe rechtaan resultaat. Altijd bruikbaar.
Het werkt allemaal even goed.

Simple stamps are always nice to have. Did a quick test. The result is as the stamps are, simple but useful. Also tried my new transfer foil. This kind doesn’t need ironing but rubbing to come off. In the mean time I tried bookbinder’s glue, acryl medium and the glue that came with the foil. All with the same effect. Don’t know whether I can wash it.

Pink phase 2

Nieuwe punchnaalden, nieuwe kansen. Eerst wol erop gepuncht en daarna draden erop genaaid. Vervolgens alles intensief doorgestikt.

New punch needles, new opportunities. First I punched some wool on the quilt and then I sewed fibres on. After that intensive stitching. I am not satisfied yet, so next round will be by hand. A great performance for someone who doesn’t even sew on a button by hand!
