Batik

Een van mijn roest lappen gebruikt voor een batik experiment. Een grote kabeljauw op de stof getekend en deze met soya wax op de stof getekend. De vorige keer dat ik gebatikt heb was het met een mengsel van paraffine bijenwas. Het verwijderen van dit wasmengsel vind ik echt een drama. Vooralsnog ook geen stomerij gevonden die het voor me wil doen. Nog niet eerder soya wax gebruikt dus ik was nieuwsgierig naar het resultaat. Het lijkt erop dat de lijnen iets minder strak zijn dan met echte was maar dat neem ik voor lief. Weegt niet op tegen het voordeel dat het gewoon in de wasmachine verdwijnt. Daarna met lichtgrijs overgeverfd. Het grappige is dat de roestplekken geen verf meer opnemen.
Ik heb nog een zeef en een stempel met een kabeljauw erop dus die ga ik er nog op drukken. Ik ben van plan de lap (ongeveer 1 bij 1 m) heel te laten.

I used one of my rust dyed fabrics for a batik experiment. Drawn a big codfish on the fabric and made it on the fabric with soy wax. Last time I made some batik I use a mixture of paraffin and bees wax. Get rid of this mixture was a complete disaster. Some people manage to find a dry cleaners to do it but up until now I didn’t. I haven’t used soy wax before so I was curious at the result. It seems to me that the lines are a bit less clear and sharp but I take it for granted. Its outweighed by the advantage of cleaning it in the washing machine. After that I dyed it light grey. The funny part is that the rust parts of the fabric doesn’t absorb the dye.
I still got a silk screen with a codfish as well as a stamp so I will screen print and paint on it as a next step. I think I leave the fabric (1x1 m) as a whole cloth.

Batik

Soms ziet iets er mooi uit maar kan je er verder weinig mee, zoals deze gebatikte soort plankjes. In plaats van procion hebben we met gewone textielverf gebatikt, dat werkt toch een stuk minder lekker. Waar je met procion verf de was er goed uitgekookt krijgt en dus soepele stof overhoudt wordt het met textielverf een soort plankje. Wel handig, lapjes die je zo in de hoek kunt zetten. Ondanks uitkoken en vervolgens ook nog maar uitstrijken (bleh) wil de was er niet uit. Het lijkt wel of het blijft plakken aan de acryl uit de textielverf.

Sometimes things are looking good but pretty useless, like these kind of batik board. In stead of procion dye we used regular textile paint to batik with. That seems to work less good. When working with procion de wax comes out with boiling in water the result now is pretty stiff. Handy, fabric which you can put right up in the corner. Despite the boiling and additional ironing the wax won’t come out. It seems as if it sticks to the acryl in the paint.

Batik play day

Vandaag een heerlijk dagje creatief. Corryna, Willy, Jacqueline, Annette en Laura kwamen een dagje batikken, batik play day. Emmy zou eigenlijk ook komen maar die was jammer genoeg ziek. Per saldo werd een groot deel van de dag besteed aan geklets en gekakel maar zoals het echte dames betaamd zijn we allemaal multi tasking. Ondertussen werd er dus ook doorgewerkt. De zon ging precies op tijd schijnen dus we konden mooi nog even meerdere lagen was opbrengen. Nu de was er nog uit krijgen!

Today a lovely creative day. Corryna, Willy, Jacqueline, Annette en Laura came to batik for a day, so it was batik play day. Emmy should have been there as well but unfortunately she was ill. Of course a substantial part of the day was used to chat but as a real lady we all are multi tasking. In the mean time the work went on. The sun was shining right on time so we could apply more layers of wax. Now the removing of the wax!

Resultaat / Result

Gisteren de batik uitgekookt. Dat is nog een heel karwei. Ik maakte meteen al de fout om dat gewoon in de keuken te doen. Aangezien ik een beetje een knoeierig persoon ben zat meteen het hele fornuis al onder het water met was. Gaat er ook zo lekker weer af. Afijn, na een uurtje knoeien hing het resultaat aan de waslijn. Ik ben er niet helemaal tevreden over. Een deel van de kleur heeft niet goed gepakt en dan met name het roze/rode deel. Op de foto’s van het vorige bericht zie je de lap in detail en groot aan de waslijn die nu midden onder in de collage staat. Voor het uitspoelen nog vrij roze/paars, na het spoelen voornamelijk blauw. De gelaagdheid is daardoor ook verdwenen. Bovendien zijn er bij het uitkoken resten verf in de witte delen getrokken waardoor die nu grauw zijn. En zo is het met nog een aantal lappen gegaan. Jammer, het resultaat had nog mooier kunnen zijn. Ik denk dat ze niet vochtig genoeg geweest zijn en dat daardoor de soda niet goed gewerkt heeft. Volgende keer beter.

Yesterday I boiled the batik fabrics. That’s a hell of a job. Right at the start I made the mistake to do it in my kitchen. Since I am a bit of a messy person my hole cooker was waxed. Not easy to get it off. Well, after an hour of monkeying around the result was hanging out on the clothing line. I’m not entirely content with the result. Part of the colours didn’t work well, especially the pink/red part. On the photo’s of the last post you can see a detail fabric and the same fabric is hanging on the clothing line, that’s the same fabric as bottom middle in the collage. Before rinsing pink/purple after rinsing blue/grey. The layering of the was is almost completely gong. During boiling the white parts took some of the excess dye and turned grey. This happened to a number of fabrics. A pity, the result should have been nicer.
I think there wasn’t enough moist during the whole process and as a result of that the soda didn’t work well. Better next time.

Batik

Afgelopen zaterdag weer een les Quilten Speciaal gehad van Els van Baarle. Een reuze leuk en inspirerend mens. Met de hele groep gebatikt. Nooit eerder gedaan en in eerste instantie wist ik nog niet zeker of dat wel leuk was. Het is dus erg leuk om te doen! We zaten met een groep van 13 kakelende dames in een net iets te kleine ruimte waar de toilet stuk was maar we hebben een hele leuke dag gehad. Daar wil ik zeker iets mee gaan doen. Door tijdgebrek konden we niet meerdere lagen batik over elkaar heen maken. Dat vond ik toch jammer. Thuis nog eens even op de plank met mediums en andere chemische middelen gekeken en daar vond ik Jacquard No Flow. Bedoeld om kleuren niet in elkaar over te laten lopen. Leek mij wel geschikt voor mijn experiment. Het lapje dat ik bij de cursus gemaakt had nogmaals gedeeltelijk afgedekt met de No Flow. Na drongen komt er een soort transparant laagje over de stof heen te liggen waar geen verf mee doordringt. Daarna geverfd met zijdeverf. Vervolgens de zijdeverf gefixeerd met het strijkijzer en de stof uitgespoeld. In een handwarm sopje lost de No Flow al snel weer op. Het resultaat is weliswaar niet om over naar huis te schrijven. Door mijn geknoei werd het lapje er niet bepaald fraaier op, maar het werkt wel. De lijnen zijn iets minder strak dan bij het gebruik van was maar dit heeft als voordeel dat je het zo weer uit je stof spoelt terwijl de was heel veel moeite kost.

Last Saturday another lesson of Quilten Special. Els van Baarle was our teacher. A pleasant and inspiring person. We did some batik with the whole group. Never done that before and at first I didn’t know whether I’d like it. But it was very nice to do. We where with 13 chattering ladies is a too small room with a broken toilet but, nevertheless we had a wonderful day.
I certainly want to do something with batik again. Through lack of time we couldn’t batik several layers across each. A pity. At home I looked on my shelf with mediums and other chemical stuff and there I fount Jacquard No Flow. Meant to inhibit the dye from flowing. It seemed suitable for an experiment. I partially covered the fabric I batiked during the course with the No Flow. After drying it’s a transparent layer on the fabric which is than impenetrable for dye. Than I dyed it with Silk dye and settled the dye by ironing. After that I washed the fabric in lukewarm water. The No Flow dissolved quickly. The result is nothing to write home about. Because of me messing around the fabric didn’t gain beauty, but, it works. The lines are a little bit less sharp than when using wax but the gain is that you can rinse the No Flow easily whereas the wax takes a lot of time and patience to iron it out.
