Expositie/exibition

Tot mijn grote vreugde en verbazing was mijn expositie afgelopen week een groot succes. Maar liefst 600 mensen liepen binnen. In Buren was ook jazzfestival en kunstmarkt. En ik zat lekker in de loop zullen we maar zeggen. Zo aan de reacties te horen had het overgrote deel geen ervaring met textielkunst. Leuke en enthousiaste geluiden gehoord. Echt goed voor mijn ego ;). Zondag komen er nog een aantal mensen terug dus wie weet wat daar nog uitkomt. Zondag geopend van 13 to 17 uur, Peperstraat 11 in Buren).

To my great joy and surprise my exhibition last week was a huge success. Over 600 people walked in.

In the town was also an arts and crafts market and a jazz festival. And I was right in between it all.

Hearing what people said about my work the majority never saw textile art before. I heard nice and enthusiastic comments. My ego went sky high ;). Next Sunday some people will come back so I am curious what it will bring.

Trots / Proud

Gisteren leuk nieuws gehad. Tot mijn grote vreugde en verbazing is mijn werk ‘Behind the facades’ is geselecteerd voor de QuiltNational van 2013. Onder het mom van ‘Nee heb je, ja kan je krijgen’ heb ik het werk van de zomer ingestuurd. Vandaag druk met alle benodigde formulieren invullen en uitzoeken hoe ik hem het handigst richting Ohio verstuur.

Good news yesterday. To my great joy and surprise my work ‘Behind the facades’ is selected for Quilt National 2013. under the pretext of ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ I answered the call of entry. Today I am busy with all forms and administration and unravel how to ship it to Ohio.

Aan alles komt een eind / everything has an end

Een hele ervaring rijker terug gekomen uit Karlsruhe. Leuk, leerzaam maar ook erg vermoeiend. De tentoonstellingsruimte was prachtig. Hoge ramen en zoveel daglicht dat er geen kunstlicht nodig was. Ik vond het zelf ook heel leuk al mijn werk zo uitgestald te zien. Thuis ligt het in grote rollen opgeslagen en er hangen er een paar in huis, maar nu hing het echt bij elkaar in volle glorie.

Leuke mensen ontmoet, contacten gelegd, vriendinnen ontmoet en natuurlijk ook nog workshops gegeven. Het Duits spreken was soms wel eens lastig. Vooral als je zoals ik 5 kwartier in een uur kletst en dan ineens af en toe moet stoppen omdat je een woord niet weet. Leuke, enthousiaste groepen gehad.

I can put that down to experience coming back from Karlsruhe. Nice, a valuable experience but very excausting as well. The exibithiion hall was fantastic. High windows and so much daylight that artificial light wasn’t necessary. It was fun to see all of my work displayed together. At home I keep it in large rolls and a few of them are hanging on my walls, but now it was hangin all its glory.

Met nice people, made contacts, met friends and of course taught some workshops. Speaking German was sometimes a bit  akward. Especially when you are used to talk 5 quarters in an hour and than all of a sudden have to stop because you don’t know one of the words in your sentence. Had nice groups!

Voorbereiding / preparation

Geen betere voorbereiding dan een rustige. Even lekker een paar dagen op vakantie geweest. Met lief en zonder kids, heel relaxed dus. Alsof ik verder niets te doen heb. Wel een prachtig stukje Nederland verkend, de natuurgebieden De Weerribben en De Wieden. Echt supermooi daar, met leuke kleine dorpjes en met een enorme hoeveelheid vogels. Genieten.

No better preparationt then a quiet one. I had a short vacation. With my love and without the children, so very relaxed. As if I have nothing left to do. We visited a lovely part of the Netherlands, the nature reserves De Wieden and De Weerribben. Areas of really outstanding beauty with pretty little villages and a huge amount of birds. Enjoying.

Nu thuis nog even genoten van het volgende blad waar ik in sta, de nieuwe Quilt&Zo. De komende dagen nog even hard aan de slag, bepalen welke quilts ik meeneem, de laatste latjes zagen, kaartjes voor bij mijn werk maken, heel veel inpakken en dan donderdag richting Karlsruhe.

Back home now and continuing enjoying the article in the next magazine I am in, the Dutch magazine Quilt&Zo.

The next few days a lot of things to do, decide which quilts I will show, sawing the last strips/slats (don’t know how it’s called in English), make info tickets for my quilts, pack a lot of things and travel to Karlsruhe on Thursday.

Voorbereiding / Preparation

Tijdens de beurs Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe (11, 12, 13 mei) ga ik twee dagen een workshop geven. Tot mijn grote plezier zijn beide dagen al volgeboekt. Al geruime tijd met de voorbereiding bezig. De workshop is bedoeld voor beginners op het Art Quilt vlak en heet ‘Structured fabric’. In mijn proefjes dus op allerlei manieren bezig met hand en machine structuur aan te brengen in allerlei verschillende stofjes. Nog lastig hoor, voor iemand die niet graag proefjes en kleine werkjes maakt. Alle tussenstappen netjes gefotografeerd zodat ik alles goed kan uitleggen. Parallel aan het kijken welke werken ik tentoon ga stellen, hoe ik ze op ga hangen en in welke volgorde. Druk als een klein baasje dus.

During the Nadelwelt fair in Karlsruhe (May 11, 12, 13), I will be teaching a workshop for two days. I am glad that both days are already completely booked. For the last days I was busy preparing myself. The workshop is meant for starters in Art quilting and is called ‘Structured fabric’. I made all kind of experimental fabrics by hand and machine incorporating various structures. Not easy for someone who doesn’t like to make a lot of trial fabrics and small work. Made photos of all the steps I made so I can explain it all to my students. Parallel I am selecting the work I need for the exposition, how to make a sequence and what fits with eachother. So, busy as a little bee.

Retourtje Karlsruht / Roundtrip Karlsruhe

Vandaag een hele stapel quilts terug gekregen uit Karlsruhe. De eindwerkstukken van mijn groep van Quilten Speciaal en de vorige groep hingen daar op Nadelwelt beurs. Zie de blog van Tineke voor foto’s.

Mijn eigenlijke eindwerkstuk was aan de andere kant van de wereld, in Ailsa Craig (Canada). In Karlsruhe hing een ander werkstuk dat ik tijdens de cursus gemaakt had.

Ik heb altijd een beetje een hekel aan alle afwerkklusjes van een quilt. Randje, gootje, hoes, ik schuif het eindeloos voor me uit. Vooral de hoes, naar karwei. Meestal pak een willekeurig stofje en rammel zo snel als ik kan een hoesje in elkaar. Aangezien ik al mijn quilts op een grote rol bewaar hebben ze gelukkig lang niet allemaal een hoes nodig. Aangezien alle quilts bij mij ingeleverd waren, kwamen ze ook weer bij mij terug. Grappig om te zien dat aan sommige hoezen bij wijze van spreken net zo veel aandacht besteedt was als aan de quilts zelf.

Today I received a whole bunch of quilts from Karlsruhe. The final work of two courses Quilten Speicaal where exhibited at the Nadelwelt show. See Tineke’s weblog for photos.

My own work was on the other end of the world, in Ailsa Craig (Canada) so I exhibited another project I made during the course.

I always hate to finalise a quilt, the border, the back, the sleeve, I always postpone it endlessly. Especially the sleeve, nasty job. Most of the time I choose a fabric at random and fix it as fast as possible. Since I keep my quilts as much as possible in a large role I don’t need that much sleeves. With all the quilts together one could see that some of the sleeves received as much attention as the quilts itself, so to speak.

Vrijdag naar de opening van de tentoonstelling van het quiltersgilde in Deventer geweest.
Het eindwerk van onze groep van Quilten Speciaal hing er ook. Al lopend langs onze werken waren we als groep tevreden met wat we gemaakt hebben.

Elkaar allemaal bij het eigen werk op de foto gezet. Van de andere dames mocht ik niet zo chagrijnig kijken als in Birmingham. Patty maakte deze foto van mij.

Friday I went to the opening of the annual exhibit of the Dutch Quilters guild. The result of our course group Quilten Speciaal was there as well. While walking along the work of our group we where pleased with the result.


We made photographs of each other posing with our work. The other ladies told me not to look as miserable as the photo from Birmingham. Patty made this one.

Home again

Zondagavond thuis gekomen van 4 dagen Birminghammen met Emmy en Willy. Een leuke ervaring. Toen ik voor het eerst de hal binnenliep dacht ik ‘Is dit nou alles’ maar zelfs op de 4e dag ontdekte ik nog winkeltjes en quilts die ik nog niet eerder gezien had. Natuurlijk ook even gekeken hoe mijn Einstein erbij hing. Niet helemaal goed vond ik want hij hing op een dwarswandje waardoor je er niet op afstand naar kon kijken terwijl dat eigenlijk wel moet. Maar, je kan niet alles hebben en de dwarswandjes moeten ook vol. In ieder geval beter dan dat je aan de buitenkant van de tentoonstelling hangt, dan hoor je er toch net niet bij. Emmy vond dat ik met mijn Einstein op de foto moest, dus voila, hier sta ik dan. Zoals je waarschijnlijk wel ziet hou ik niet zo van ‘op de foto moeten’. Ik heb het toestel liever in handen.

Natuurlijk ook het een en ander ingekocht. Als ik de uitstalling zo bekijk zie ik mijn lievelingskleur rood wel genadeloos naar boven komen. Vooral de klossen garen van Oliver Twist en Valdani vind ik erg mooi.

Sunday evening I came home from 4 days Birmingham. A nice experience. When I walked in the exhibition centre the first time I thought ‘is this all’, but even on the 4th day I discovered quilts and shops I hadn’t seen before. Of course I had to take a look how Einstein hung. Not completely to my satisfaction because he was on a cross wall so one couldn’t look at it from a distance. Which the quilt needed. But, you can’t have it all and something must be on the cross wall anyway. It could be worse: hanging on the outside wall. Emmy insisted on being photographed with my Einstein, so here I am. As you can see I don’t like ‘being on the photo’. I’d rather have the camera in my hands.

Of course I bought some. Looking at it you can see my favourite colour red shining through.

I specially like the Valdani and Oliver Twist yarns.

Trots / Proud

Deze week begon goed. Vanmorgen een mailtje gekregen dat mijn quilt ‘A storm broke loose in my mind’ geselecteerd is voor de Saqa expositie ‘Art meets science’. De show gaat in première in Birmingham. Ben even kwijt waar nog meer naar toe maar ben al heel blij met Birmingham. Een goed gelegenheid om daar ook eens heen te gaan.

This week had a good start. This morning I received an email announcing that my quilt ‘A storm broke loose in my mind’ has been selected for the Saqa exhibition ‘Art meets science’. The show will have it’s premiere in Birmingham. I’ve lost the other locations but I am honoured with Birmingham. Good opportunity to visit the show this time.

Uit de naad

Inmiddels hangen alle werken van de tentoonstelling van Uit de naad in het gebouw Kunstfactor in Utrecht. Hier zijn ze tot en met 15 december te zien. Dit is verder geen openbaar gebouw maar hier is ook de Textielbibliotheek van de Stichting Textiel Plus. De tentoonstelling valt tijdens openingstijden te bezichtigen (donderdag en vrijdag van 10.30 tot 13.30 uur). Dit was mijn bijdrage.

Until the 15th of December the Uit de Naad show will be in the building of Kunstfactor in Utrecht. You can see them during opening hours of the Textielplus library. This was my contribution.

Show

De laatste blog was alweer van even geleden. Vorige week in Alkmaar geweest. Zowel op de jaarlijkse tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde als op de tentoonstelling ‘Uit de naad’ hing een werk van mij. Ik vond vooral de ‘Uit de naad’ tentoonstelling erg leuk. Allemaal eigentijdse werken. Voor herhaling vatbaar zou ik zeggen. Op de tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde waren zowel traditionele als moderne quilts te zien. Ik vind het altijd leuk om een beetje bij een quilt te blijven hangen en dan het commentaar van andere bezoekers te horen. Ik had deze Einstein ingestuurd en daar vond ik vooral de inspirerende kwalificatie ‘o ja, dit is weer zo’n vrij werk’ erg leuk. Vooral nare blik op de mevrouw die het zei! Ik geloof dat het niet echt mengt het traditionele en het moderne werk!

My last post was a while ago. Last week to Alkmaar where the annual show of the Dutch Quilters guild took place. Parallel there was another show called ‘UIt de naad’ which means something like ‘out of joins’. I had a work on both shows. I liked Uit de naad especially. All contemporary work. Should be a yearly show as well. On the other show there where both traditional and contemporary works. I always love to hang around a work and listen in on the comment of other people. In front of my own work (this Einstein) one of the most inspiring qualifications was ‘O yes, this is one of those free works’. Particularly the look on the face while speaking those words! I think that the traditional quilting world will never mix with the contemporary!

Uit de aarde

Geïnspireerd door de geweldig leuke cursusdagen die we bij Quilten Speciaal van Els van Baarle en Cherilyn Martin kregen ben ik naar het Stadsmuseum in Woerden geweest. Daar is nog tot 5 juli de tentoonstelling Uit de aarde te zien. Een echte aanrader. Buiten deze 2 dames is er ook werk van Cas Holmes en Jean Draper te zien. Deze laatste kende ik niet maar hun werk is ook zeker de moeite waard. Het stadsmuseum is gevestigd in het voormalige stadhuis van Woerden, een mooi historisch pand en een prachtige plek voor deze tentoonstelling. Jammer dat je de werken niet even mag aanraken en voelen, terecht natuurlijk want anders wordt het wel wat smoezelig. Ik denk dat alle ‘textiel-mensen’ het gevoel wel kennen, even het naadje van de kous willen weten!
Gelukkig mocht je daar foto’s maken. Voor hier op de weblog hou ik het maar even bij een plaatje van de site van het museum, een drieluik van Els van Baarle, Plinius III IV en V.

Inspired by the wonderful course days Els van Baarle and Cherilyn Martin gave us at Quilten Speciaal I went to the Stadsmuseum in Woerden (the same exhibition was in Parc Wesserling in the Alsace). Until the 5th of July you can see the exhibition Uit de aarde (something like From the earth). Highly recommended! Beyond these two ladies there’s also work from Cas Holmes and Jean Draper. These I didn’t know but their work is worth looking at as well. The museum is situated in the old town hall, a beautiful historical building and a lovely spot for this exhibition. It’s a pity you may not touch the work and feel everything, which is correct of course because otherwise everything would turn into smudgy stuff. But I think all ‘textile-people’ know the feeling, you always want to touch it and know all the inns and outs! Fortunately taking pictures was allowed. For here on the blog I’ll stick to one of the official pictures from the museum website, a triptych from Els van Baarle, Plinius III IV en V.
