Textiel Plus evenementendag
Yesterday I went to the Textielplus Day (an organisation which promotes the use of textiles in arts) in Nieuwegein. It’s one of the most enjoying fairs I know. Almost every stand has got nice stuff and when I have a pocket full of money I could spend it all there. I controlled myself very good, a book, some dyed merino and silk and some strange fabrics.
I saw a lot of acquaintances and so I talked a lot. I was together with my daughter and she came to know a real princess. A beautiful hand doll from Irene van der Wolf.

Cursus / Course again
Everyone did their homework with a lot of fun and result. I was so enthusiastic I even made two.
First I started a snow and ice landscape. Difficult all those kinds of white. I used lace, puff paint, organza, cellophane (beneath the organza as the glimmering of the ice), tulle, dried mulberry bark, and a lot of little pieces of fabric and fibres. Here and there a lick of paint.
Than it was springs’ turn. De poppies aren’t flowering yet here but I like them very much. A photo from last year. The foundation is made of scrim with embellished merino. The poppies are made of tyvek with silk paper glued on and painted with acryl. A lot of threads and fibres embellished over it. With the sewing machine and by hand I added some loose stitches in the background.

Quilts met een Q / Quilts with a Q
Yesterday I made the ‘travel around the world’ to Leeuwarden (the upper north of the Netherlands). For a change I went by train. Despite the three hour trip I have to say, a very relaxing journey. The sun was shining through the window and I took all kinds of things to entertain myself during the trip. Together with Emmy and Corryna I visited the exhibition ‘Quilts with a Q’. Interesting and nice. Of course we went to see the quilts of the contest because one of our friend Willy (photo) was there. Unfortunately the deadline for the public award was expired.

De smaak te pakken / come to like something
I’ve never done that before, make a textile texture based on a photo, but the homework assignment of my quilting class made me very enthusiastic. The homework was finished ages ago but I felt like making another one. Starting point is this photo. I decided to accentuate the colours a bit. After all, its an interpretation of a photo and not a portrait of a poppy. The start is all ok, In the meantime I glued silk paper on tyvek and painted it with acryl to make the petals. A pretty difficult job.

Huiswerk / homework
My homework for Quilten Speciaal has never been finished as fast as this time. Most of the time I am a last minute finisher but this time the homework was very nice to do. I still have one and a half week so maybe I’ll make another piece as well. Here a sneak preview. More details after the next class.

Nice box
We are right in the middle of the school holidays and nevertheless I found some time to continue the box. A big deal with three kids at home who all want something else, don’t agree at any time and when all is said and done don’t want anything at all but hanging in front of the tv or pc. I think I am glad that next Monday will be an ordinary Monday again. I I'm eagerly looking forward to it!
In the mean time all parts of the box are finished.
I sewed the embroidered fabric on thick double sticky Vilene and put lining on the other side. The bottom and sides are cut just like that, nothing done further.
The top is hand-embroidered. Unfortunately for my fingers thought of that after putting on the thick Vilene. Clever. But, it set it right.
I thought the top could use some extra embellishments so I made three flowers of thread and beads.
The leaves which will be right under the flowers are made of embellished organza on which I sewed nerves. Now some time to assemble it.
Machine embroidery
After Cherilyn’s class the sewingmachine was smiling towards me all day. The homework for the next class is creating a landscape with texture. Ideas enough in my head but I wanted to test some on the sewing machine first. Started a sampler to test stitches and colours.
To prevent that the result will end on a pile of things ‘that look good, but what should I do with it’ I thought before that it will be a box when finished. A box for threads and fibers and small things to be finished. In the evening I like to sit in the corner of the couch with little works that need some embroidery or something. Behind the couch is the windowsill on which is a permanent collection of all kinds of stuff. A bit of a mess. It seemed a good idea to make something to put it all in. Looks a bit more organised.
As base I took a bit of a shiny fabric and sewed some lace and plasticized tulle on. I firmly sewed this. Tried the difference between metallic yarn on the bobbin or from the reel.
My machine works trouble free with all kinds of yarn on the bobbin. Nice effect!

Texture

Than there is the Around the World in 20 Quilts challenge. ‘Brave new world’ is the theme and we had to use something recycled in the quilt. The first I thought off was the Aldous Huxley book with the same name. I read it once in high school but not a clue what is was all about. A bit of googling learnt that it’s about a future world which is controlled by rationality and technology. All people are healthy and happy and war and poverty is unknown. Utopia. Than I googled the writer as well. In his biography he was described as ‘a tall sad tulip’. The fabric with the grey tulip I made last week!
I already thought about the re-use material, the worn out cleaning rag I used for weeks to wipe of daubs of paint. Painted the cleaning rag with the same paint as the tulips. So, I’ve got a start.

Druk, druk, druk … / Busy, busy, busy…
I haven’t switched on the sewing machine in days. In the mean time I tried some small things for my tulip quilt. I made screen prints from photo’s en tried some different kinds of paints.
The paint of the grey tulips was a bit to fluid but it shines beautifully. I don’t know whether I will use the fabric. We’ll see.

Batik
I certainly want to do something with batik again. Through lack of time we couldn’t batik several layers across each. A pity. At home I looked on my shelf with mediums and other chemical stuff and there I fount Jacquard No Flow. Meant to inhibit the dye from flowing. It seemed suitable for an experiment. I partially covered the fabric I batiked during the course with the No Flow. After drying it’s a transparent layer on the fabric which is than impenetrable for dye. Than I dyed it with Silk dye and settled the dye by ironing. After that I washed the fabric in lukewarm water. The No Flow dissolved quickly. The result is nothing to write home about. Because of me messing around the fabric didn’t gain beauty, but, it works. The lines are a little bit less sharp than when using wax but the gain is that you can rinse the No Flow easily whereas the wax takes a lot of time and patience to iron it out.

Iets nieuws beginnen / Starting something new
A few times a year Emmy, Willy and I give each other an assignment. Last time it was Emmy’s term to come up with something. Already few months ago. She gave us two pages with haiku’s and we have to use one as source for a quilt. I didn’t go well, no progress at all. I stared at the pages a few times but no ideas. Until today. My English isn’t good enough to give a proper translation of the haiku but the intention is something like this: First day of spring, folded gloominess, opens for pleasure.
It seems that our weather (some kind of autumn with rain, wind and a lot of grey) is dark enough to long for spring. My inspiration is a bunch of tulips. I am photographing them in various stages of bloom. I am delighted by the colours I am going to use, the colours of spring, yellow, orange and red. I will use several techniques, painting, stamping, screen print, printing on fabric and application.

The past
The last couple of weeks I am not very productive. Busy with all kinds of silly small jobs and other things. So, this time some kind out of sheer necessity, back to the past, the pre-blog-era, December 2006.
Nice to have some reflection because you see your work developing during time. I am still learning, feels good. This one is quit big, 1,5 * 2 meter. Made of commercial dyed batiks and hand dyed cotton. I still like it but it’s a bit ‘squary’. The patience I had!

Happy new year!
Probeersels.
Today I went for a walk through the snow with the dog. In my opinion I may stay until the end of March, immediately followed by spring. It always surprises me that the whole country turns upside down when having a little bit of snow (several centimetres). In countries with loads of snow and for a longer period this is not the thing. Strange kind of people we Dutch.
As I already mentioned, Storm is ready but I think I will try to apply for a show so I’ll only show a detail. I find it annoying actually not to publish anything about a quilt when applying for a show. A little bit old fashioned. Doesn’t fit with this (internet) era.
Also did some small things, just trying some things.
