Marmeren / marbling
Yesterday I spent the morning messing around with some dye. Always nice. And yet another pair of trousers with dye spots because I thought an apron wasn’t necessary. I tried marbling for the first time. First at random, without a plan and with the standard colours. I think it’s a bit wild but nice. Later this week I’ll try it again, this time with a plan.

Naar WIlly / to Willy
Yesterday again a lovely creative day. Most of the time we are going to Willy’s, she’s living ‘quit central in the country’. For both Emmy and me it’s about a 100 kilometres (That’s almost half of Holland). As ever Willy made a lot of food. The three of us are enjoying these days. As usual a lot of inspiration.
Vandaag allemaal onze Speelgoed opdracht gereed. Emmy’s thema was buiten spelen. Today we showed each other the finished project. The idea was to make a quilt based on a precious toy of our youth. Emmy’s theme was Playing Outside. As a child she used to play outside ever, with good or bad weather. The circles you see on the quilt represent the four seasons. Of course Emmy embroidered it lovely.
Willy used the theme Merry go Round. In front of Willy’s house there used to be carnival at Quieen’s Birthday (a public holiday in the Netherlands with a lot of fairs and carnivals. Orange is the royal colour). Willy loved the horses on the merry go round and she always wanted to sit on it. Unfortunately she never did. She even put the songs they used to sing as school kids on the quilt.
At the end my ladies. The background was a bit to loud. I treated it with golden painstiks to make de background background again.
’s Middags samen gaan monoprinten.
In the afternoon we went monoprinting. We all didn’t like it. The fabric is nice but not nice enough. Emmy and I think we’ll never do it again. Willy will give it another try.
With Willy’s 2CV to the next village to buy some wool, we don’t have something to do yet. It felt like a school trip. A lot of shouting and laughing. It’s a very funny car to drive. Very basic, no dashboard and you can look outside at odd places. But you can drive very hard on speed ramps.
Our new assignment came from Emmy. Look how marvellous she made it. In the package 2 A4’s with haiku’s. That are Japanese poems which consists of 17 syllables. The assignment is to use one of the haiku’s as inspiration for a quilt.

Trees finished
I sewed my silk screened fabrics together at random. After that I took a leaf from my trained plane tree. This one is standing right in front of my window and throws around nice light spots around the room. This leaf I’ve drawn on voile. Once on the top the colour of the voile totally disappeared, so I let go the paintstiks on that. After that the result was far to massive so I used the heat tool to make holes. The result was not what I meant to make. I should have stopped after sewing the fabric together.

Stapje verder / a step further
Again I made a step forward. The top is ready now. I made smaller ladies in a nice and a bit vulgar fabric. Every Barbie dress needs some sparkle anyhow!

In a hurry
Hurry, hurry, hurry, next week I have to finish my Toy quilt and there is still a lot to do. I cut them into pieces. Not without a reason. The ladies represent the three barbies my sister and I had in our youth. And as you probably understand, three wasn’t a smart number for two girls. That’s why the ladies are divided. After finishing that part I thought the ladies where a bit to bright coloured. So a bit of paint added. For what I have in mind with the quilt the background is OK now. I can always put some more paint on.

Trots / proud
Just before the holidays I signed one of my quilts up for the contest of the European National Patchwork Meeting in Ste. Marie aux Mines. I thought nothing ventured, nothing gained. To my surprise I got the message that I am among the finalists. Nice and an honour. There where 162 quilts sent in and 36 made it to the final. The nice part of it is that the quilts will travel through Europe for a year. They will be exhibited in several places. I will have it back in September 2009. The theme of the contest is Feather. My quilt is called Buteo buteo. That’s the Latin name for the common European buzzard. Of course I may not show the quilt on my weblog but I can raise a corner of the veil.

All goods things come to an end
And then they where over, the holidays. On the one hand a pity but on the other it’s nice to go home again. My mandala project travelled with me but I haven’t touched it at all. With a temperature of over 30 degrees my hands where already sweaty by the thought of the fabric. We visited 3 countries. First we stayed near Venice for a week. Of course we visited Venice. A really beautiful and romantic city. A lot of glass objects and a lot of masks, that's where they are known of, and very touristic but with enough quiet streets and canals to wander around.
After Italy a week in Croatia. Rough coasts, beautiful see and blue skies. Finally we stayed in Slovenia for another week. Quiet country with very friendly people.
Now there are 8 loads of washing waiting for me but I'm itching to get to the sewing machine in stead.

Around the World in 20 Quilts, the tree
Very busy but still doing other things
Almost summer holidays, wonderful, I am in the mood already. Suddenly I realised that shortly after the holidays I need to finish a lot of things. At the end of August the Beloved-Toy project Willy gave us, in the beginning of September the first project of Around the World in 20 Quilts and in the beginning of October the Mandala project of the Dutch Bag Ladies. I only started the Mandala, the rest was just in my head. Time to let it all out.
For the Toy quilt back to what I liked most in my youth, my barbies. Looking at today's youth (Talking to you is fossil Sandra) it’s most likely to have 20 barbies than 1. I had two and my sister got 1. So that makes 3. I alredy used these three ladies for a Dutch Bag Ladies Project. But better good steeling than bad thinking, so they good be reused as Barbie.
Eerst een lap stof geverfd in lekker vage kleuren.
First dyed a piece of fabric in vague colours.
After that I tried something new, airbrush foil. It’s a foil with a bit of glue on the back, thin and easy to cut. With the stencil burner you burn through the top layer but not through the paper backing. It’s went well. With the foil I covered the shape of the ladies.

Yes, it's becoming a mandala
Curious what the other members of the group are making? See the weblog (partly English, most of it Dutch)

Mandala ???
In the mean time I started my mandala quilt. It's a good thing that at least I know where to go because when you look at the picture you could think ‘oh it’ll come to nothing’. But it will!
I construct a 3D mandala. The brown parts will be treated first. I already made a felted lime green fabric. It will be in the hole. The idea is that the points will curl around.

Creatieve dag / Creative day
Today a wonderful creative day with Emmy and Willy. We where dyeing. With yesterdays temperature it felt like dying. It was over 30 degrees. Messing around with some water seemed a good idea. Willy has got a large garden so we laid everything flat on the ground. Despite all the space around Emmy paced through the dye.
In stead of putting everything aside for a while we left the fabric outside. So they dried to speedy and the dye didn’t soak enough into the fabric. After washing we had a set of pale fabric. We don’t know how Willy’s fabric looks because she is more patient than we are, her fabric is still dyeing. We guess they look fabulous.

Mandala project
Voel me vereerd.
I have been busy the past couple of weeks, but I can’t show it yet. Since you never know until you ask I will send a quilt to the competition of the European Patchwork meeting. The theme is Feather. Nice to work on and I am satisfied with the result. More later on, a secret for now. Next week Willy and Emmy may say what they think of it.In the mean time I figured out what to do with the Dutch Bag Ladies theme ‘ mandala’ Willy gave us. We have to use all of the fabrics Willy dyed (the brown series on the photo) and we may add one new colour. We may use another fabric in that colour but we should make the fabric of threads and fibres first. I always like the reds but it didn’t get along with this particular brown. Fortunately I like lime green as well. I collected all the right coloured material.
Since one day the Dutch Bag Ladies have got their own weblog. Not much on it yet, but it will grow.
A nice message today, the quilt I send in for the annual exhibition of the Dutch Quilters guild will be produces as postcard. For sale as from the exhibit. I am honoured.

Voorbereiding/ Preparation
Deze keer toch even anders.
Normally I don’t do much preparation for a quilt. I make a rough sketch, doodle around on the computer, dye the colours I think I need, and that’s it. After that it’s a matter of just starting and see where it ends. This time a bit different. I want to execute some self designed machine embroidery objects. That compelled me to try in advance. That's me all over, make a design in the middle of a quilt, mess up and have to remove it. I won’t give it a try!Same for the lady. First I have to explore how my template with foil looks on fabric before I mess up my quilt. I am surprised of myself, so thoughtful. The longer we live the more we learn.

Stof verven / Dyeing
Despite a whole room filled with fabrics the present stock was as for the colour just not right. So a day of dyeing began. Wool, silk, netting, embroidery yarn and plain cotton, that makes a nice clothesline. Is about the only time I like washing and ironing. It’s always a surprise how the colours and patterns in the fabric show up.
And last but not least, Ellen, one of the Dutch Bag Ladies, started a blog.

Two creative journeys in one week.
Dutch Bag Ladies, the result of the second challenge Yesterday we went to Mieke in Amsterdam. Nice in itself, I was born there and used to live there a couple of years. I noticed I became a provincial in the mean time. Busy, busy, busy in the city. It turned out that Mieke lives on a beautiful spot in the middle of a school garden complex. An haven of piece in a busy city. We sat in the garden admiring each others work. As mentioned before I was not satisfied by my work but on the photo it turns out better than expected. This time it’s Willy’s turn to fill the bag with fabrics and an assignment. Anyone who knows Willy knows that you won’t get a pile of fabrics just like that but that she makes a real present of it. We all got a pile of beautiful dyed fabrics. All in one colour scheme but more lighter. And of course a new assignment. We have to use a mandala as inspiration and may use one more colour. As icing on the cake we went to the Albert Cuyp market. This is a 6 days a week market with market stalls full of funny stuff, fish, greenstuffs, ugly cloths and various kinds of people. Behind the market there are a lot of shops which fits to the market. Also a lot of fabric stores. Of course we came home with some fabrics!
Paper business
Wednesday we went to Willy. Emmy, Willy and me are always looking forward to our meetings. Most of the time we talk the hind leg off a donkey. This time we had to roll one's sleeves up. We went dipping paper at a friend of Willy’s, Bep. For weeks I collected old envelops. The paper had to be ripped in shreds which we had to soak in water for a night. I started very good (not at all), because in the morning I realised I had forgotten to soak the paper. Fortunately the other ladies did what they had to do. Dipping paper (don’t know if that’s the right expression) seemed to be a pretty messy thing. Not at all what I like but the result was nice anyway. Now think of something I can do with the paper.

Finally finished
OK, is it had to be finished finally. Saturday the DBL project should be ready. I am not completely satisfied, but is good enough. Next time better. Of course the result have to be secret until next Saturday, so the photo comes later.
Something that turned out right was my black and white project. It started as a experimental piece with the heat gun and it ended stretched on a piece of board. The board was glued to a canvas.

Finally found the courage to start with the DBL project, it should be ready the 31th. Almost everyone of the group reported that they are finished. And I haven’t even started yet! In some way I had a ‘ quilters block’, not feel like quilting, excuses. But I thought that I have to finish this before doing something with the fancy new ideas that got into my mind. First of all I decided not to use two of the fabrics. They didn’t get along with the rest of the fabrics and made the barrier even greater. So that relieved. Yesterday I made a good start. Still a little bit of stitching to go, the border and finished. This morning I first read an really suspenseful book, couldn’t stop reading. After that went in to my ‘ glory hole’. Who did I see there, one of my biggest fans, especially when the work is soft and stuffed, the cat. He was sleeping lovely and warm so I decided at once that he should sleep as long as he wanted. Woke up a second when taking a picture but now, two hours later, he is still sleeping like a log. It’s an oldie already, with only three legs and no tale (he just came home once without these parts), so, one will let him sleep. Maybe finish the quilt this afternoon.
In the mean time a nice message. Both the quilts I sent in for the yearly exhibit of the Dutch Quilters guild where accepted!
