I certainly want to do something with batik again. Through lack of time we couldn’t batik several layers across each. A pity. At home I looked on my shelf with mediums and other chemical stuff and there I fount Jacquard No Flow. Meant to inhibit the dye from flowing. It seemed suitable for an experiment. I partially covered the fabric I batiked during the course with the No Flow. After drying it’s a transparent layer on the fabric which is than impenetrable for dye. Than I dyed it with Silk dye and settled the dye by ironing. After that I washed the fabric in lukewarm water. The No Flow dissolved quickly. The result is nothing to write home about. Because of me messing around the fabric didn’t gain beauty, but, it works. The lines are a little bit less sharp than when using wax but the gain is that you can rinse the No Flow easily whereas the wax takes a lot of time and patience to iron it out.

Iets nieuws beginnen / Starting something new

A few times a year Emmy, Willy and I give each other an assignment. Last time it was Emmy’s term to come up with something. Already few months ago. She gave us two pages with haiku’s and we have to use one as source for a quilt. I didn’t go well, no progress at all. I stared at the pages a few times but no ideas. Until today. My English isn’t good enough to give a proper translation of the haiku but the intention is something like this: First day of spring, folded gloominess, opens for pleasure.
It seems that our weather (some kind of autumn with rain, wind and a lot of grey) is dark enough to long for spring. My inspiration is a bunch of tulips. I am photographing them in various stages of bloom. I am delighted by the colours I am going to use, the colours of spring, yellow, orange and red. I will use several techniques, painting, stamping, screen print, printing on fabric and application.

The past
The last couple of weeks I am not very productive. Busy with all kinds of silly small jobs and other things. So, this time some kind out of sheer necessity, back to the past, the pre-blog-era, December 2006.
Nice to have some reflection because you see your work developing during time. I am still learning, feels good. This one is quit big, 1,5 * 2 meter. Made of commercial dyed batiks and hand dyed cotton. I still like it but it’s a bit ‘squary’. The patience I had!

Happy new year!
Probeersels.
Today I went for a walk through the snow with the dog. In my opinion I may stay until the end of March, immediately followed by spring. It always surprises me that the whole country turns upside down when having a little bit of snow (several centimetres). In countries with loads of snow and for a longer period this is not the thing. Strange kind of people we Dutch.
As I already mentioned, Storm is ready but I think I will try to apply for a show so I’ll only show a detail. I find it annoying actually not to publish anything about a quilt when applying for a show. A little bit old fashioned. Doesn’t fit with this (internet) era.
Also did some small things, just trying some things.
