Mandala project

Onder het mom van ‘nee heb je, ja kan je krijgen’, ga ik een quilt insturen voor de wedstrijd van de European Patchwork Meeting. Het thema is Veer. Leuk thema om iets van te maken, en ik ben er wel tevreden over. Later meer, nu nog even geheim. Volgende week mogen Willy en Emmy de quilt keuren.
Ondertussen ook bedacht wat ik ga maken bij het Dutch Bag Ladies thema ‘Mandala’ dat Willy ons gegeven heeft. Het is de bedoeling dat we alle lapjes van Willy gebruiken (de bruine serie) en een kleur toevoegen waarvan we zelf een lapje mogen maken van draadjes etc. Ben zelf erg gek op alles dat rood is maar dat combineerde niet zo lekker. Gelukkig vind ik lime groen ook prachtig. Alvast alles verzamelt dat de juiste kleur heeft. Sinds 1 dag hebben de Dutch Bag Ladies een eigen weblog! Staat dus nog niet superveel op maar dat gaat vast komen.
Ondertussen vandaag nog een leuk bericht, de quilt die ik ingestuurd heb voor de Algemene Tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde wordt door het gilde uitgebracht als kaart. Te koop op de ATT! Voel me vereerd.

I have been busy the past couple of weeks, but I can’t show it yet. Since you never know until you ask I will send a quilt to the competition of the European Patchwork meeting. The theme is Feather. Nice to work on and I am satisfied with the result. More later on, a secret for now. Next week Willy and Emmy may say what they think of it.
In the mean time I figured out what to do with the Dutch Bag Ladies theme ‘ mandala’ Willy gave us. We have to use all of the fabrics Willy dyed (the brown series on the photo) and we may add one new colour. We may use another fabric in that colour but we should make the fabric of threads and fibres first. I always like the reds but it didn’t get along with this particular brown. Fortunately I like lime green as well. I collected all the right coloured material.
Since one day the Dutch Bag Ladies have got their own weblog. Not much on it yet, but it will grow.
A nice message today, the quilt I send in for the annual exhibition of the Dutch Quilters guild will be produces as postcard. For sale as from the exhibit. I am honoured.

Voorbereiding/ Preparation

Over het algemeen doe ik niet zoveel aan het voorbereiden van een quilt. Ik schets wat, klieder wat op de computer, verf wat kleuren waarvan ik ongeveer denk dat ik ze nodig heb en dat is het dan wel. Daarna is het een kwestie van beginnen en maar zien waar het uitkomt. Deze keer toch even anders. Ik wil wat zelf gemaakte ontwerpjes uitvoeren op de borduurmachine en dat noopt mij toch tot vooraf uitproberen. Echt iets voor mij om zo’n geborduurd patroon ergens midden op je quilt te moeten uithalen. Daar laat ik het toch maar niet op aan komen. Hetzelfde voor onderstaande dame. Eerst maar eens kijken hoe mijn sjabloon met folie uitkomt op stof voordat ik mijn hele quilt verpruts. Staan verbaasd van mezelf over zoveel nadenkendheid. Verstand komt met de jaren zullen we maar denken.

Normally I don’t do much preparation for a quilt. I make a rough sketch, doodle around on the computer, dye the colours I think I need, and that’s it. After that it’s a matter of just starting and see where it ends. This time a bit different. I want to execute some self designed machine embroidery objects. That compelled me to try in advance. That's me all over, make a design in the middle of a quilt, mess up and have to remove it. I won’t give it a try!
Same for the lady. First I have to explore how my template with foil looks on fabric before I mess up my quilt. I am surprised of myself, so thoughtful. The longer we live the more we learn.

Stof verven / Dyeing

Er liggen allerlei projecten op me te wachten. Iets met het thema Mandala voor de Dutch Bag Ladies, de opdracht van Willy met het thema, dierbaar speelgoed uit je jeugd en eentje die ik mezelf gesteld heb voor een tentoonstelling. Die laatste blijft dan natuurlijk nog even geheim!
Ondanks een kamer vol met stofjes was de huidige voorraad qua kleur natuurlijk net niet toereikend. Het zal eens niet zo zijn. Even een dagje verven dus maar. Wol, zijde, mul, borduurdraad en gewoon katoen, daar krijg je een leuk waslijntje van. Is ook eigenlijk het enige moment dat ik wassen en strijken leuk vind. Altijd verrassend om de kleuren en patronen in de stof tevoorschijn te zien komen.
En o ja, Ellen, een van de Dutch Bag Ladies, is ook een blog gestart.

All kinds of projects are waiting for me. Something with the theme ‘mandala’ for the Dutch Bag Ladies group, the assignment from Willy ‘ a beloved toy of your childhood and one I gave myself for an exhibition. The last one will remain a secret for a while!
Despite a whole room filled with fabrics the present stock was as for the colour just not right. So a day of dyeing began. Wool, silk, netting, embroidery yarn and plain cotton, that makes a nice clothesline. Is about the only time I like washing and ironing. It’s always a surprise how the colours and patterns in the fabric show up.
And last but not least, Ellen, one of the Dutch Bag Ladies, started a blog.

Two creative journeys in one week.

Dutch Bag Ladies, het resultaat van de tweede uitdaging.
Gisteren naar Mieke geweest in Amsterdam. Op zich al leuk, ik ben er geboren en heb er jaren gewoond. Merk wel dat ik een echte provinciaal geworden ben. Druk, druk, druk in de stad. Mieke bleek op een prachtig plekje in een schooltuinen complex te wonen. Een oase van rust in een drukke stad. Heerlijk in de tuin elkaars werk bekeken. Zoals ik eerder al meldde ben ik niet erg tevreden over mijn resultaat maar zo op een foto valt het best nog mee. Dit keer was Willy aan de beurt om het tasje te vullen met stofjes en opdracht. Wie Willy kent weet dat je dan niet zomaar een stapeltje in je tasje krijgt maar een echt kadootje. Dat bleek ook wel, voor iedereen een stapel prachtig ingepakte aflopend geverfde lapjes, zonde om uit te pakken! Natuurlijk ook een opdracht. Gebruik een mandala als inspiratie en voeg 1 kleur toe, dat komt allemaal goed. Als toetje op de dag nog even naar de Albert Cuyp markt. Natuurlijk niet zonder thuis te komen met stofjes!

Dutch Bag Ladies, the result of the second challenge
Yesterday we went to Mieke in Amsterdam. Nice in itself, I was born there and used to live there a couple of years. I noticed I became a provincial in the mean time. Busy, busy, busy in the city. It turned out that Mieke lives on a beautiful spot in the middle of a school garden complex. An haven of piece in a busy city. We sat in the garden admiring each others work. As mentioned before I was not satisfied by my work but on the photo it turns out better than expected. This time it’s Willy’s turn to fill the bag with fabrics and an assignment. Anyone who knows Willy knows that you won’t get a pile of fabrics just like that but that she makes a real present of it. We all got a pile of beautiful dyed fabrics. All in one colour scheme but more lighter. And of course a new assignment. We have to use a mandala as inspiration and may use one more colour. As icing on the cake we went to the Albert Cuyp market. This is a 6 days a week market with market stalls full of funny stuff, fish, greenstuffs, ugly cloths and various kinds of people. Behind the market there are a lot of shops which fits to the market. Also a lot of fabric stores. Of course we came home with some fabrics!

Paper business

Woensdag naar Willy geweest. Emmy, Willy en ik kijken altijd erg uit naar onze ontmoetingen. Meestal kletsen we elkaar de oren van het hoofd. Dit keer moesten ook de handen uit de mouwen. We gingen papier scheppen bij een vriendin van Willy, Bep. Al weken driftig oude enveloppen gespaard. Het papier moest in kleine snippers die we vervolgens een nachtje moesten laten weken in water. Het begon al weer goed bij mij want ik kwam er ’s morgens achter dat ik vergeten was de snippers in de week te zetten. Gelukkig hadden de andere dames hun best gedaan. Het papier scheppen bleek een tamelijk knoeierige gebeurtenis te zijn. Niet helemaal mijn ding maar het resultaat was toch wel leuk. Nu nog bedenken wat ik ermee ga doen.

Wednesday we went to Willy. Emmy, Willy and me are always looking forward to our meetings. Most of the time we talk the hind leg off a donkey. This time we had to roll one's sleeves up. We went dipping paper at a friend of Willy’s, Bep. For weeks I collected old envelops. The paper had to be ripped in shreds which we had to soak in water for a night. I started very good (not at all), because in the morning I realised I had forgotten to soak the paper. Fortunately the other ladies did what they had to do. Dipping paper (don’t know if that’s the right expression) seemed to be a pretty messy thing. Not at all what I like but the result was nice anyway. Now think of something I can do with the paper.
