Quilten Speciaal

Zaterdag de hele dag naar Quilten Speciaal geweest. Voor de verandering op locatie, het Aboriginal Art Museum in Utrecht. In dit museum een wisselende collectie van aboriginal kunstenaars. Ongeveer drie kwart van het museum was gevuld met kunst van Paddy Bedford. Deze kunstenaar maakt vrij grafische voorstellingen van het Australische landschap met gebruik van een beperkt kleurenpallet. Ik vond het wel aardig maar niet meer dan dat. De bedoeling was om symbolen en delen uit de aanwezige schilderijen te gebruiken als inspiratie om bij een van de mede cursisten een schildering op een van de handen te maken.

Saturday another course day of Quilten Speciaal. This time on a different location, the Aboriginal Art Museum in Utrecht. In this museum you find an alternating collection of various Aboriginal artists. Three quarter of the museum was filled with an exhibition of Paddy Bedford. The artist makes graphical representations of the Australian landscape and he uses a limited colour pallet. I found it pretty nice but not more than that.
The purpose was to use symbols and parts out of the paintings as inspiration to make a painting on the hand of one of the others.

Natuurlijk ook de bespreking van ons huiswerk. We hadden allemaal een bruin herfstig batiklapje gekregen en moesten iets maken met het thema herfst. Ik vond het lapje een beetje lelijk en heb het verstopt onder organza. Toen ik de achtergrond klaar had ging de naaimachine stuk. Uiteindelijk maar wat met de hand eroverheen geborduurd. Het resultaat vond ik zelf maar matig.


Of course we talked about our homework. We all became a brownish autumns batik fabric and had to make something within the theme Autumn. The fabric was not my taste and I hid it under a layer of organza. After I finished the background my sewing machine went broke so I was not able to finish it properly. Finally I decide to embroider some on the background but the result is moderate I think.

Finished overfishing

Afgelopen vrijdag zijn we met de Dutch Bag Ladies bij elkaar geweest. Dit was meteen de laatste keer dat we onder deze naam opereerden. Ondertussen vinden we dat de wat shabby uitstraling van de naam de lading niet echt meer dekt. Toe aan vernieuwing. Wat blijft is het idee dat een van ons een thema bedenkt en daar maximaal 2 stofjes bij kiest Nieuw is de naam, voortaan gaan we verder onder de naam TeXplosions.
Het resultaat van het thema Onder water wereld is nog te zien op het weblog van de DBL. Wat we van het volgende thema, Vrouw, maken zal te zien zijn op ons nieuwe weblog TeXplosions. Ook een eigen website is in de maak.

Last Friday we came together with the quilt Group Dutch Bag Ladies. This was at the same time the last time we used this name as a group. We think the character of the name doesn’t fit our purpose any more. Time for change! What stays is the idea that one of us considers a theme and the choice of a maximum of 2 fabrics. New is the name, we will continue under the name of TeXplosions.
The result of the theme Under Water World can be seen on the blog of DBL. What we make of the next them Woman, will be shown on our new weblog TeXplosions. A website is coming as well.

Dit is wat ik uiteindelijk van het thema gemaakt heb. Vissen zwemmend in zee. Er overheen visnetten en losse vissen vastgeknoopt met visdraad als symbool voor overbevissing. In de losse vissen zijn alle uitgereikte stofjes gewerkt. Ik heb erg veel ruzie met de stofjes gehad. De kleuren vloekten een beetje bij elkaar maar door ze te bedekken met een laagje plastic is dat nu niet meer zichtbaar.

This is what I eventually made of the theme. Fish swimming in the see. Over it I embroidered fishing nets and some loose fishes tied with fishing line as a symbol for overfishing. I processed all the given fabrics in the loose fishes. I fought a lot with the fabrics. The colours mismatched with each other so I covered them up with layers of plastic.

Freedom continued

Sommige ideeën blijken achteraf goed uit te komen. Zo bleek mijn handquilt experiment erg goed getimed want de naaimachine ging stuk. Gelukkig toen ik al het machine werk aan mijn quilt gedaan had. Ik heb over de hele quilt losse woorden Freedom machinaal geborduurd en een keer de zin ‘Is never free’ vrij machinaal geborduurd. Alles daartussen wordt handwerk.
Ben benieuwd hoe me dat bevalt.
Eerst alle woorden Freedom met grove rode steken soort van vastgemaakt aan de achtergrond. Ik bleek nog hand geverfd perlé garen in precies de juiste kleur rood te hebben. Wie wat bewaard heeft wat zullen we maar zeggen. Voordeel van handmatig quilten is wel dat je er televisie bij kan kijken. Zo kom ik ook eens van al die opgenomen detectives en andere moord series af. En wie weet, straks vind ik dat handquilten zo leuk dat ik het nog eens ga doen. Vooralsnog vind ik het maar lastig om kleine en regelmatige steekjes te maken!
Het vervelende van een kapotte naaimachine is dat er soms echt iets af moet, zo ben ik halverwege het huiswerk van Quilten Speciaal blijven steken. Volgende week cursus maar dan is de naaimachine nog niet gemaakt. Dus ik vrees dat het huiswerk verder ook met de hand moet.



Looking back some ideas turned out better than expected. My hand quilting experiment had a good timing because my sewing machine went broke. Fortunately just after all the machine work was finished. I machine embroidered the word Freedom all over the quilt and added the sentence ‘is never free’ once using free machine embroidery. Everything in between those parts will be done by hand. I am curious whether I’d like that.
First I made some coarse red stitches to sort of attach all the words Freedom to the background. I had some hand dyed embroidery yarn in exactly the right colour left. Of saving comes having I would say. The advantage of hand quilting is that at the same time you can watch television. So I made a good start in watching all those recorded detective and murder series from my dvd recorder. And who knows, maybe I like hand quilting so much that I will do it again. As yet I find it very difficult to make small and even stitches.
The hard part of a broke sewing machine is that some things just need to be finished at a certain time. Next week another course day of Quilten Speciaal but I am only half way the homework. I guess that will be handwork as well.

Freedom still in progress

Deze week een paar heerlijk productieve dagen gehad. Ken je dat, je gaat ’s morgens achter je naaimachine zitten en ineens bedenk je dat je honger hebt. Dat klopt dan want het is inmiddels half drie. De top van Vrijheid is nu klaar. Aan alle kanten scheef en krom maar dat hoort wel bij mijn gevoel bij het woord vrijheid. De breakdown printing stof in het midden gebruikt. Het doorstikken wordt een combinatie van machinaal borduren en handquilten. Dat wordt voor het eerst dat ik met de hand ga quilten. Denk dat het hele grote steken worden!

This week I had a few nice productive days. You know that, in the morning you go sit in front of your sewing machine and a some point you realize you’re hungry. And that’s right because it’s already half past two. So, the top of Freedom is ready now. It’s crooked and curved but that sticks to the feeling I have with the word freedom. The breakdown printing fabric is used in the centre. The quilting will be a combination of machine embroidery and hand quilting. It’s the first time ever I will quilt by hand. I guess it will be huge stitches!

Freedom in progress

Voordat ik aan een quilt begin heb ik altijd wel al een uitgewerkt idee van hoe het moet gaan worden. Al is dat niet altijd een garantie dat het uiteindelijke resultaat er uitziet als het ontwerp, want er bestaat ook zoiets als voortschrijdend inzicht. Het is wel eens verfrissend om tegen je eigen natuur in te gaan. Ik ben maar een beetje in het wilde weg gaan knippen en aan elkaar gaan naaien. Om een gegeven moment werd het zelfs mij een beetje te woest van kleur. En dat is niet snel hoor. Ik besloot dat er een rustiger achtergrondstofje tussen moest. Aangezien ik nog helemaal into breakdownprinting ben leek me dat een fijn plan.
Donkergrijs met donkerbruin was het plan. Het blijft wel een lastige techniek om precies onder controle te krijgen maar voor zo’n knoeikont als ik is het een feestje.
Buiten knoeierig (bij mij valt de lepel altijd languit in de printpasta) ben ik ook een beetje ongeduldig. Ik had ’s middags geprint en de volgende ochtend besloot ik de lappen uit te spoelen. Dat was dus ietsje te vroeg. Er kwamen prachtige lappen uit maar een tintje te licht. Het hele proces dus nog maar een keertje over gedaan, gelukkig werden deze lappen precies goed.

Before I start a new quilt I always have developed the idea of the looks of the quilt. This is no guarantee that it will look like that finished because of moving view. But, sometimes it’s refreshing to go against your own nature. For this quilt I cut and sewed about in a random.
At a certain point even I considered it a bit too loud of colour. That happens very rarely.
I decided to use a calm background fabric. The plan was dark grey with dark brown. Since I am still into breakdown printing that seemed a good technique to use. It’s not easy to obtain the perfect result with breakdown printing but for a messy person like I am it’s a feast.
I am not only messy (my spoon always goes under in the print paste) but I am also impatient. I printed in the afternoon and the other morning I decided to rinse the fabric. That was a bit too early. The fabric is beautiful but much to pale. So I did it all again with a darker result.

Uit de naad

Inmiddels hangen alle werken van de tentoonstelling van Uit de naad in het gebouw Kunstfactor in Utrecht. Hier zijn ze tot en met 15 december te zien. Dit is verder geen openbaar gebouw maar hier is ook de Textielbibliotheek van de Stichting Textiel Plus. De tentoonstelling valt tijdens openingstijden te bezichtigen (donderdag en vrijdag van 10.30 tot 13.30 uur). Dit was mijn bijdrage.

Until the 15th of December the Uit de Naad show will be in the building of Kunstfactor in Utrecht. You can see them during opening hours of the Textielplus library. This was my contribution.

Vrijheid / Freedom

De onderwaterwereld quilt van de Dutch Bag Ladies is bijna af. Over een week of twee komen we bij elkaar en daarna zet ik pas een foto op mijn blog.
Ondertussen ook begonnen met het thema Vrijheid. Dit thema werk ik samen met Emmy en Willy uit. Als eerste stap hebben we alle drie twee keer anderhalve meter stof uitgekozen en die stukken in 3-en gedeeld. De andere twee hebben elk twee van die stukken bewerkt. Het is de bedoeling dat we er vervolgens een quilt van maken. Leuk bedacht (ik gedaan, eigen schuld, dikke bult) maar omdat we van elkaar niet weten wat we met de stof doen weet je ook niet hoe je het terug krijgt. Weg vrijheid! Gelukkig kennen we elkaar inmiddels goed en kennen we ook elkaars kleur voorkeuren. Neemt niet weg dat ik een best lastig setje heb nu. De linker stoffen zijn de oorspronkelijke stoffen, de middelste zijn van Emmy en de rechter van Willy. In eerste instantie had ik nog niet zo’n beeld bij het thema Vrijheid. In tweede instantie trouwens ook niet. Besloten om maar te doen wat het thema al in zich heeft: gewoon beginnen en zien waar het uitkomt. Een roestlap en een thee roestlap erbij gepakt. Geen plan, en als enige idee dat dat wat er als eerste uitkomt de achtergrond stof wordt. Zo heb ik nu een baan met repen stof, een baan met willekeurig geknipte flauwe bochten en een paar vierkantjes. Tja, hoe het nu verder moet? Meestal helpt het wel om het een tijdje weg te leggen en er later nog eens naar te kijken. Morgen weer een dag.

The Under Water World quilt of the Dutch Bag Ladies is almost finished. Within two weeks or so we will come together and after that I will put a photo on my blog.
In the mean time I started the theme Freedom. This theme I explore together with Emmy and Willy. The first step was to divide two fabrics into three pieces and sent both a piece of each of the fabrics. They processed it a bit. The intention is to use all of these pieces in a quilt.
Nice thinking (I did, it's my own fault) but since we don’t know from each other what we are doing you don’t know how your fabric returns. Freedom gone! Fortunately we know each other very well so we know each others favourite colours. All the same it’s a bit of an inconvenient set of fabric. The fabric left on the picture are the original fabrics. The middle set is the one Emmy sent me and the right one is Willy’s. At first I didn’t have much idea with the theme Freedom, at second neither. I decided to do what’s implicit with the word freedom, just do something. I added rust and tea dyed fabric. I had no plan and the only idea is what comes out of the process will be the background fabric. So now I have a strip of striped fabric, something with curves and something with squares. Humph, what’s next. Tomorrow another day. In general it helps when I lay it somewhere and look at it later.

De laatste blog was alweer van even geleden. Vorige week in Alkmaar geweest. Zowel op de jaarlijkse tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde als op de tentoonstelling ‘Uit de naad’ hing een werk van mij. Ik vond vooral de ‘Uit de naad’ tentoonstelling erg leuk. Allemaal eigentijdse werken. Voor herhaling vatbaar zou ik zeggen. Op de tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde waren zowel traditionele als moderne quilts te zien. Ik vind het altijd leuk om een beetje bij een quilt te blijven hangen en dan het commentaar van andere bezoekers te horen. Ik had deze Einstein ingestuurd en daar vond ik vooral de inspirerende kwalificatie ‘o ja, dit is weer zo’n vrij werk’ erg leuk. Vooral nare blik op de mevrouw die het zei! Ik geloof dat het niet echt mengt het traditionele en het moderne werk!

My last post was a while ago. Last week to Alkmaar where the annual show of the Dutch Quilters guild took place. Parallel there was another show called ‘UIt de naad’ which means something like ‘out of joins’. I had a work on both shows. I liked Uit de naad especially. All contemporary work. Should be a yearly show as well. On the other show there where both traditional and contemporary works. I always love to hang around a work and listen in on the comment of other people. In front of my own work (this Einstein) one of the most inspiring qualifications was ‘O yes, this is one of those free works’. Particularly the look on the face while speaking those words! I think that the traditional quilting world will never mix with the contemporary!
