Yessss!

Nice message from Ste Marie!

" ...Dear Mrs Van Velzen,

We are happy to inform you that your quilt “Imagine all the people…” has been selected among the great number of entries we received and is now part of the 43 quilts (all categories)
that will be exhibited for the first time at the EPM 2014 next September, before starting its journey around the world! ..."

I am not allowed to publish the quilt before the show, so here a sneak preview from the quilt-to-be.

Once more ...

Vooruit nog eentje dan ...

Oke, another one ...

Voortgang / Progress

Not a lot of action the last few weeks, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t action at all. I sent in some work for competitions and shows and that should still remain a secret for a while.
We worked on our book as well. Lovely pictures from our beautiful fabric.

Voorbereiding / Preparation Karlsruhe

The preparations for the show in Karlsruhe are going steady. Most of it is Janine’s part as going to such an event as stand holder means a lot of packing to do. My part was taking care of our advertising material. Thanks to my brother I did it. From Friday till Sunday we will try to sell as much of our books as possible.

Wunderbar Wunderbar Wunderbarrrrr

Yes, we made it, the German version of our book came right on time from the printing service. We wil be at the Karlsruhe show with it: Farbe auf Stoff.

While we are busy working on our next book there are some activities around our first book. In the mean time it is translated in German by Claudia Helmer. Today it is off to the printing facility.

Janine and I will be at the Nadelwelt event in Karlsruhe to promote our book.

Nieuw boek / new book

JanineWetzels (webshop mijn-eigen.nl) and I are busy working on our new book. All you can do with Drimarene en Procion fibre reactive dye will be in. Of course we have to test and do all dyeing techniques. This is the result of breakdown printing on silk. It’s flapping in the wind beautifully.

New York I

Daarna allerlei bijpassende stoffen geverfd.

Last May I visited New York for a few days (too short!). I made hundreds of photos. My favourite position was on the middle of the street. Not always confortable. As a fresh new tourist I made of course a whole series of standard pictures. Including one of Times Square at night. I edited the photo and printed it on cotton. I dyed several matching fabrics.

Oh, oh, oh …

A long time ago since I posted my last blog. Unnoticed the last post was exactly four months ago.
No blog posts doesn’t mean I haven’t done anything in the mean time. Far from that.
At the end of Oktober I started a series of quilts inspired on New York. The city had a big impression on me. So now I am working on the fifth work on this theme. More about this in the next post.
Also another work in commission came upon my path. A difficult task this time. Someone asked me to add the portraits of his wife and three daughters in a quilt. The difficult thing is that it turns into a portrait gallery easily and that was not wat I meant to make. Happily ever after because all three ladies looked like themselves in the finished quilt.

Janine Wetzels and I are also working very hard on our next book. We want to make some kind of fabric dyeing bible. There are no such books available in Dutch. We want to make a complete view on everything around fiber reactive dyes as Drimare en Procion dyes. More about that next time. That’s it for now, I hope to get used to blogging again!

Werk in opdracht / work in commission

Sometimes honorable things will come on ones path. My exhibition in Buren inspired a very nice lady to ask me to make a quilt in remembrance of her daughter who passed away last August. Her daughter lived in Italy for a long time and everyone in the family had Tuscany as their favorite holiday destination. Some elements had to be incorporated in the quilt: Italy, here favorite flowers (lavender, sunflower and poppies) and a connection with the song ‘ Somewhere over the rainbow’.
The favorite flowers element saddled me with a challenging color scheme.

Eerst lekker aan het breakdownprinten gedaan. Dat leverde al lekkere kleurige lapjes op.

I did some breakdown printing first. With a lot of colorful fabric as result.

Finally this is the result, a Tuscan diptych. It's already at the principals wall.
