Nice box

De doos is klaar. Deftige doos wel. Net niet helemaal goed, de deksel is ietsje te klein maar als je er maar genoeg instopt bolt de doos lekker op en zie je er niets van. Gelukkig ben ik nogal een verzamelaar dus dat volstoppen gaat wel lukken. Vroeger ooit wel eens van die beklede kartonnen dozen gemaakt. Minder mooi maar wel ietsje steviger dat karton. De Fast2Fuse is wel net stevig genoeg maar het had nog beter gekund. Volgende keer beter.
Mijn vensterbank ziet er in ieder geval beter uit met de rommeltjes netjes opgeruimd.

The box is ready. Distinguished box. Just not perfectly right, the lid is a bit to small but when you stuff the box with loads of things it gets a bit round and you won’t notice it. Fortunately I am a bit of a collector so stuffing won’t be a problem. I used to make cardboard boxes covered with fabric decades ago. Less beautiful but the cardboard is more solid than the Fast2Fuse I used for this box. Next time better. But my windowsill looks more need and tidy now.

Doos / box

Zo, midden in de voorjaarsvakantie toch nog even tijd gevonden verder te gaan met de doos. Een hele kunst met 3 kids thuis die allemaal iets anders willen, het er allemaal niet over eens worden en als het puntje bij het paaltje komt allemaal het liefst achter de tv of pc hangen. Ik geloof dat ik blij ben als het maandag weer een gewone maandag is. Ik verheug me er stiekem een beetje op!
Ondertussen zijn alle onderdelen van de doos gereed.
Ik heb de geborduurde lap op hele dikke, dubbelplakkende vlieseline genaaid en de andere kant voorzien van voering. De onderkant en zijkanten zijn zo uit de lap gesneden en verder zo gelaten.

We are right in the middle of the school holidays and nevertheless I found some time to continue the box. A big deal with three kids at home who all want something else, don’t agree at any time and when all is said and done don’t want anything at all but hanging in front of the tv or pc. I think I am glad that next Monday will be an ordinary Monday again. I I'm eagerly looking forward to it!
In the mean time all parts of the box are finished.
I sewed the embroidered fabric on thick double sticky Vilene and put lining on the other side. The bottom and sides are cut just like that, nothing done further.

Op de bovenkant heb ik met de hand geborduurd. Helaas voor mijn vingers kreeg ik dat idee pas toen alles al op die dikke vlieseline zat. Handig. Maar, het is er wel van opgeknapt.

The top is hand-embroidered. Unfortunately for my fingers thought of that after putting on the thick Vilene. Clever. But, it set it right.

Ik vond dat de deksel nog wel wat extra versiering kon gebruiken dus ik heb 3 bloemvormen gemaakt van wol en kraaltjes.

I thought the top could use some extra embellishments so I made three flowers of thread and beads.

De blaadjes voor onder de bloemen zijn gemaakt van gepunchte organza waar bladnerven op gestikt zijn. Nu nog even in elkaar zetten.

The leaves which will be right under the flowers are made of embellished organza on which I sewed nerves. Now some time to assemble it.

Machine embroidery

Na de les van Cherilyn lachtte de naaimachine me toe. Het huiswerk voor de volgende keer is het maken van een landschap in textuur. Al ideeën genoeg maar ik wilde eerst wat dingen uitproberen op de naaimachine. Begonnen aan een proeflap om steken en kleuren uit te proberen. Om te voorkomen dat het resultaat meteen weer ergens op een stapel ‘leuk maar wat moet je er eigenlijk mee’ terecht zou komen vooraf bedacht dat dit een doos gaat worden. Een doos voor draadjes en kleine half af werkjes. Ik zit ’s avonds graag in het hoekje van de bank nog lekker te rommelen met draadjes etc. Achter de bank is de vensterbank en daar ligt een permanente collectie rommeltjes van mij. Het leek me een goed plan om een mooie doos te maken waar al deze rommeltjes in kunnen. Ziet er weer net iets georganiseerder uit.
Als basis een lap foute glimmende stof genomen en daar banen kant en geplastificeerde tule op gestikt. Flink met de naaimachine overheen geraced. Het verschil tussen metallic garen in de spoel of op de klos geprobeerd. Er blijkt vrij probleemloos allerlei dik garen op mijn spoel te kunnen. Voordeel van een machine zonder spoelhuis! Geeft een leuk effect.

After Cherilyn’s class the sewingmachine was smiling towards me all day. The homework for the next class is creating a landscape with texture. Ideas enough in my head but I wanted to test some on the sewing machine first. Started a sampler to test stitches and colours.
To prevent that the result will end on a pile of things ‘that look good, but what should I do with it’ I thought before that it will be a box when finished. A box for threads and fibers and small things to be finished. In the evening I like to sit in the corner of the couch with little works that need some embroidery or something. Behind the couch is the windowsill on which is a permanent collection of all kinds of stuff. A bit of a mess. It seemed a good idea to make something to put it all in. Looks a bit more organised.
As base I took a bit of a shiny fabric and sewed some lace and plasticized tulle on. I firmly sewed this. Tried the difference between metallic yarn on the bobbin or from the reel.
My machine works trouble free with all kinds of yarn on the bobbin. Nice effect!

Texture

Bij Quilten Speciaal hadden we les van Cherilyn Martin. Een leuk en inspirerend mens.
Doel was om een plaatje te vertalen in texturen met behulp van machinaal borduurwerk. En om gelaagdheid aan je werk toe te voegen. Na wat vrij proberen hebben we vanuit een foto geprobeerd om de textuur met behulp van draadjes en lapjes zoveel mogelijk te benaderen.

At de course Quilten Speciaal we had a class by Cherilyn Martin. A nice and inspiring lady. The purpose was to translate a picture into texture by using machine embroidery. And to add layering to your work. After some trial and error we tried to achieve texture with threads and fabric based on a photo.

Zo maar weer eens iets gedaan / Finally done something.

Het schilderen begint ergens op te lijken, eindelijk. Nog 2 dagen werk en dan is het klaar. Aangezien het bijna schoolvakantie is schuif ik die 2 dagen eens even lekker een stukkie op.
Tijd om verder te gaan met de haiku opdracht van Emmy. Het zit in ieder geval allemaal in mijn hoofd en sommige stukjes zijn al uitgewerkt. Dus het begin is er.
Ook de Brave New World opdracht van Around the World in 20 Quilts lag er nog. Brave new World is het thema en we moesten recycled materiaal gebruiken in de quilt.
Het eerste dat me te binnen schoot was het gelijknamige boek van Aldous Huxley. Ooit wel eens gelezen op de middelbare school maar geen idee meer waar het over ging. Even googlen leerde me dat het boek een toekomstige wereld beschrijft die geheel beheerst wordt door technologie en rationalisme. De mensen zijn gezond en gelukkig, oorlog en armoede kennen ze niet. Een utopie. Toen ook nog maar even de schrijver en daarover vond ik iets dat toevallig past bij een net gemaakt probeersel voor de haiku quilt. In een biografie over de schrijver wordt deze beschreven als een ‘tall sad tulip’. Het lapje met de grijze tulp van vorige week!
Ik had het re-use materiaal al bedacht, het versleten poetsdoekje waar ik al weken lang de klodders verf mee van plekken veeg waar het niet hoort te zitten. Dezelfde verf als van de tulpen losgelaten op het poetsdoekje. Het begin is er.

The painting of the walls is getting somewhere, finally. Two more days to go and than it’s finished. But since it’s almost school holiday I decide to shift these two days till after the holiday. Time to continue the haiku challenge Emmy gave us. It’s already in my head and some parts are worked out already. So, I made a good start.
Than there is the Around the World in 20 Quilts challenge. ‘Brave new world’ is the theme and we had to use something recycled in the quilt. The first I thought off was the Aldous Huxley book with the same name. I read it once in high school but not a clue what is was all about. A bit of googling learnt that it’s about a future world which is controlled by rationality and technology. All people are healthy and happy and war and poverty is unknown. Utopia. Than I googled the writer as well. In his biography he was described as ‘a tall sad tulip’. The fabric with the grey tulip I made last week!
I already thought about the re-use material, the worn out cleaning rag I used for weeks to wipe of daubs of paint. Painted the cleaning rag with the same paint as the tulips. So, I’ve got a start.

Druk, druk, druk … / Busy, busy, busy…

Na jaren voor me uit schuiven moest het er toch maar eens van komen. Het binnen schilderwerk. Een jaar of acht geleden hebben we een stuk aan het huis gebouwd. Het nieuwe stuk werd netjes geschilderd en een stukje verder, ergens op de muur van het oude deel hield het nieuwe schilderwerk abrupt op. Maar van het een komt het ander dus zo bedacht ik dat ook de hal, tot de zolder aan toe, geschilderd diende te worden. Wat een klus. Gelukkig bij de woonkamer een paar dagen hulp gehad dus dat zat er na twee dagen op. Nu ben ik al weer tijden in de weer met de hal en trap. Vooral de trap is een rotklus. Knoeien is uit den boze want alleen de zijkanten moeten geschilderd en er ligt tapijt op de trap. En ik ben nogal een knoeier.
De naaimachine is echt in geen weken aan geweest. Ondertussen wel wat kleine dingetjes uitgeprobeerd voor mijn tulpen quilt. Van foto’s van tulpen zeefdrukken gemaakt en verschillende soorten verf uitgeprobeerd bij het zeefdrukken. De verf van de grijze tulpen was te dun maar glanst wel prachtig. Weet nog niet of ik deze lapjes verder in mijn quilt ga gebruiken. We zien nog wel.

After years of postponing it was bound to happen. Painting of the walls. Eight years ago we built an extension to the house. The new part was painted neatly and a little bit further on the old wall the new painting stopped suddenly. But one thing leads to another so I thought that not only the living room but also the hallway, the stairs, the landing on the first floor and the attic should be painted as well. A huge job. Fortunately I had a pair of extra hands when painting the living room, so that was finished in two days. Now I am busy with the hallway and the stairs. Especially the stairs are a heavy job. Only the sides and raised edges should be painted but there’s carpet on the steps so I can’t mess around. And I am a bit of a messy type.
I haven’t switched on the sewing machine in days. In the mean time I tried some small things for my tulip quilt. I made screen prints from photo’s en tried some different kinds of paints.
The paint of the grey tulips was a bit to fluid but it shines beautifully. I don’t know whether I will use the fabric. We’ll see.

Kadootje / Present

Gisteren moest ik een klein kadootje inpakken. Uiteindelijk werd de verpakking bijna mooier dan het kadootje. Uit de stapel experimenten een lapje gevist en dit verstevigd. Beetje met de naaimachine eroverheen en de juiste vorm uitgesneden.

Yesterday I had to wrap a little present. In the end the wrap turned out almost better than the present. I took a piece of fabric out of the pile of experiments and strengthened it. A bit of sewing and I cut out the right shape.
