Wat ik leuk vind aan mijn blog / What I like about my blog.
Thank you all for your reactions on my last post. The combination of taking a break with the quilt and your reactions gave new inspiration.
In the mean time I demolished the felt part. I am busy making a transparent framework. The willow branch may stay but will be shifted towards the middle. On the transparent piece the underlying little landscapes will be shown. Parts of the under part of the felt will be on the transparent piece Whether this will be the final idea, I don’t know. I can always throw it off again! This was how the felt part looked before my actions, photos of the new result will follow.

Tijd voor reflectie / Time for reflection
It was a bit quit on my blog. Had a week holiday break. Wet and cold is the summary but nevertheless, I had a nice holiday. The day after we came home I had the presentation of the final assignment of the quilting course. The quilt was finished just before we went away. Fortunately because my family didn’t like the idea of me, my quilt and my sewing machine on vacation. Looking at my result I didn’t have the ‘wow feeling’ . But, since I didn’t have time left I left it like it was. The day of the presentation was the first one I saw it again and my first thought was that it wasn’t alright. See for yourself. The felted part is too much a piece on it’s own. It doesn’t fit. In the mean time I had several ideas about improving the quilt. These vary from ‘rip the felt off’ till ‘cut the whole quilt into pieces and sew them together again. In time I learned that the last solution isn’t one you should execute immediately, these ones are a bit irreversible. The last idea is that I remove the felted part and make something else out of it. Don’t yet what or how. The background is pretty ok I think.
The work of me and my fellow course mates will be seen at the annual show of the Dutch quilters guild in September. Due date for the photos for the catalogue is June 1st, so I can do something about it. I am in good company, almost the complete group has got work to do before the work is show proof.

Process in stress
I am making high speed now. As they say haste makes waste, but up until now everything goes quit well. Most of the time I am de kind of person who cuts off that last piece of thread and simultaneously cuts right in the middle of the quilt. Fortunately I didn’t run into such dramas. After a lot of puzzling with all of the fabric that should fit with the photos the top is finished now. I think this weekend the quilting will be done as well. Next step is to find a place for my felt construction. I don’t know what to do with that yet. But, I think I will manager to finish it all in time. Maybe I just need a little bit of stress. Sometimes. This will be the last sneak preview. My fellow course members will be the first to see the finished work.

So when all is displayed on the table it looks very inspiring to me. Just a bit of sewing to do. Don’t you like my silk embroidery floss?

Tijdnood … / Running out of time …
In the mean time the 8th of May is coming closer at high speed. I know which way I am going with my end assignment. But, to say I am actually working towards something, no. Starting point is the landscape around the place I live. I am living in a totally flat part of the country which is criss-crossed with wide, slow rivers. So, water will be part of my design. In the battle with the water the willow has got an important role. Willows can resist water around their roots for quit some time. It’s vigour is phenomenal. Every branch you put into the ground will strike root and become a tree. For ages willow branches are used as base for all kinds of water works. I specially like the old crumbled ones. Sometimes it seems to me no more than a piece of bark with a mop of branches above. zaterdag 10 april 2010
Lucca
The streets on the map are batiked. Within the block of houses I rubbed the pattern of gaze. In the gaze pattern I embroidered crosses every now and than. These represent the people living in the city of Lucca. The result is that the streets are a bit like a surface in relief. The outsides of the map are quilted in the other strips of fabric. Only after our next TeXplosions meeting I will show the whole quilt. The other ladies sure are the first to see it!

Eindopdracht Quilten Speciaal / Final assignment Quilten Speciaal assignment
It should be finished May the 8th, my end assignment from the QS course. Time to start it I guess. My assignment to depart from a photo, and to choose one from my nature photo collection. I have to work pictorial in blues and rust colours. zaterdag 27 maart 2010
City trip Lucca
Even lekker dik overheen quilten maar.

Beetje rommelen / messing around
A while ago I started a, in my opinion, small quilt (68x89 cm). The aim was that it should look not like anything. With ‘not like anything’ in this case I mean non figurative. Recently someone mentioned to me that on most of my quilts there was something of a realistic picture. Never realised that so time for a change. The idea was to use some experimental textiles I made. I had made a number of equal rectangles and a simple whole cloth quilt. My first action was to sew the rectangles right on the quilt. The result was rather ugly.Usually I am quit rigid. Everything I don’t like goes straight into the bin. But because I liked the experiments so much I collected all of my patience and removed them properly.
The next step was to cut these nice rectangles in strips. Nice strips! With some fabric, medium, paper from a shoebox en brown acrylic paint I made some kind of fabric paper. Treated this with treasure gold and cut into strips as well. Without any plan sewed on the quilt. It really became ‘not like anything’.

Stad / City
De laatste weken niet veel uitgevoerd. Heb je zo wel eens. Andere prioriteiten. Is goed gelukt.
Done not much lately. That happens every now and then. Other priorities. This weekend I continued the City theme. A bit of trying out which way to go. I manipulated some photo’s of Lucca in photoshop elements en printed them on fabric. I didn’t like the combination of sharp photo’s with the breakdown printed fabric. I wanted my photo’s to have the same kind of runned through edges as you get with breakdown printing. I managed it well. The photo’s on fabric should be somewhere on my map of Lucca. But where? In the mean time houses-fabric I made breakdown printing processed in ‘ragged’ strips. As if you see the city through the torn of a map.

Workshop breakdown printing

It was finished for several weeks but since my dear friend follows my blog every now and then I couldn’t publish a photo of it yet. Yesterday was her birthday and so she’s got her present now. She was very happy with it and the colours matched the redecorated interior perfectly. It’s nice to see that some quilts disappear at the same speed they are made. Because in the mean time my pile of quilts is growing. Do you recognize it? It’s time to become a very commercial person who sells things every now and then.

Stad / City II
In the mean time I made a second piece of fabric for the City theme. After the Lucca houses I made a batik of the map of Lucca. Looks good. The quilt will be inspired by the maps you often see near the city center. ‘You are here’ is stated on it, accompanied with a little arrow. Just have to make the design now.

Workshop-in-the-kitchen
Today I gave a workshop Breakdown Printing. As stated in the title of this post, it was in my kitchen. Fortunately I’ve got a large kitchen-diner because when I do this on my own it’s a complete mess but with six people it definitely is. In the morning we made the screens with thickened dye. It was a nice sunny day but the power of the sun wasn’t strong enough yet to dry the screens. But one could always use a hairdryer instead. After lunch we made prints on fabric. Lots of oh’s and ah’s. This example is Corryna’s. To me it’s still a fascinating technique. It fits me because of the messy character.
After finish I was glad to have a large bath on high legs in the downstairs bathroom. The best place to rinse all.

Stad / City
Because I was planning to do some breakdown printing I decided to start something for the theme City of our art quilt Group TeXplosions. I like the theme very much. When Jose gave us the theme I almost instantly thought that I should use a photo of the Italian city Lucca. I’ve been there a few years ago and reminded it as a city full of character. Part of it was renovated beautiful but another part had a southern European chaotic and unpolished character. One could climb a tower with this view as result, a lot of roofs.
I used the photo to make a stamp. I didn’t mirror the image because I used it as a relief rather than as a stamp.
Result was this silkscreen.
Van het zeefdrukraam is deze stof gemaakt.I made this fabric with the screen.

Workshop breakdown printing
As every workshop you need a manual with lots of explanation and examples. So, I had to make some pictures of the process. The combination of very dirty hands and a camera was not very handy but, at least the first step of the process is documented. Here you can see the surface that’s beneath as well how the silk screen looks eventually.

Out of the blue
A few weeks ago I promised a friend to make a warm en cosy blanket to use on their new couch. One under which you can huddle together with the kids, some crisps, dog nestled at your feet, watching tv, you know. Up until now nothing came of it. In the mean time I made some stencils of a complete family, including a dog and stencilled them on fabric. Vrouw / Woman
Wednesday a lovely day at Corryna’s together with the other ladies of TeXplosions. It was a pleasant day with lots of tasty things and a lot more chats. Funny to see that everyone made something completely different with the same theme and fabric. This is what I made of it.

Woman ...
I used one of my rust dyed fabrics for a batik experiment. Drawn a big codfish on the fabric and made it on the fabric with soy wax. Last time I made some batik I use a mixture of paraffin and bees wax. Get rid of this mixture was a complete disaster. Some people manage to find a dry cleaners to do it but up until now I didn’t. I haven’t used soy wax before so I was curious at the result. It seems to me that the lines are a bit less clear and sharp but I take it for granted. Its outweighed by the advantage of cleaning it in the washing machine. After that I dyed it light grey. The funny part is that the rust parts of the fabric doesn’t absorb the dye.I still got a silk screen with a codfish as well as a stamp so I will screen print and paint on it as a next step. I think I leave the fabric (1x1 m) as a whole cloth.

Work in progress
Me toch maar even kwaad gemaakt.
In the mean time the kids are back to school. The holidays are nice but I always appreciate the moment the return to school. A head full of ideas but unfortunately I have to finish my homework for the Quilten Speciaal course first. Last lesson next week. At the end of the day we all will become our final assignment. I tried to make something of it. The purpose was to paint your dream on fabric. Not a pictorial representation of your dream but an impression in terms of colour, feeling, rhythm, speed, warm, cold, form, etc. Use of your fingers in stead of a brush was recommended. The fabric but should remain in one piece and we had to make a quilt of it. Is some way or the other it had little appeal for me. I think that’s because I wanted to do all sorts of other things but this. Eventually I made two pieces of fabric. One with paint and one with wool and the embellisher. I couldn’t resist cutting one into pieces. Not finished yet but this is what it’s going to look like.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!/ happy newyear!
Long time no blogging done. I don’t get anything done these days. Lots of ideas but lack of time. The first week of the holidays we went to Italy with the whole family. There was a speed skating camp with my eldest sons speed skating club. We went to Collalbo in the German speaking part of the Italian Alps.
Had a lot of fun. It was a lot of work to shop and cook for about 40 people. Nice to see the difference in Christimas traditions. In the Netherlands one decorates the Christmas tree around the second weekend in December while in Collalbo the tree is decorated the day before Christmas. The 25th of December is our highlight of Christmas while there Christmas eve is. In the restaurant we had dinner the tree was decorated right before dinner. First the real candles where lighted and than we had to sing some traditional Christmas carols before we could start dinner. Nobody song Silent night, holy night since primary school so when the Dutch guests where asked to sing a Dutch verse we sounded not very text proof.
In the mean good news too, one of my quilts will be part of the book ‘500 Art Quilts’ van Lark Books.
